PASSIVATING SOLUTION


WHAT IT DOES:
Essentially, passivation of stainless steel is a surface cleaning process. Eliminating surface contamination is necessary so the natural exposure to air will allow the formation of a thin, durable chromium oxide film. Additional passivation using #540L is specified to remove light surface contamination from stainless steel surfaces. That includes shop dirt, iron particles from cutting tools and machining lubricants. #540L enhances the level of chromium in the protective film which raises the corrosion resistance and protects against surface staining. CHEMCLEAN #540-L is scientifically formulated to form a protective film when used on Type 300 or 400 stainless steels. It will not corrode or etch the surface. CHEMCLEAN #540-L may also be used on aluminum to remove the copper smut formed after acid or alkaline treatment.
WHAT IT IS:
CHEMCLEAN #540-L is a mixture of acids, orange in color.

HOW TO USE IT:

IMMERSION - Small pieces that require maximum passivation can be immersed in CHEMCLEAN #540-L for 30 minutes at room temperature. (Raising temperature shortens immersion time.) Follow with clean water rinse.


SWABBING - A minimum degree of passivation can be generated on large pieces by sponging surfaces with #540-L for a minimum of 5 minutes. Rinse with clean water.

POWER PAK 85 - For quick passivation of welded areas - ElectroClean with POWER PAK and OX-OUT #155 or #536 as needed. Rinse with clean water. Use an applicator handle and wiping material reserved for passivating solutions only. Apply #540-L to the area liberally with the POWER PAK on "High." Follow with clean water rinse.
CAUTION
Strong Acid Mixture ... Personnel handling and using OX-OUT #540-L should wear proper acid proof clothing and gloves. Eye protection is required. Avoid contact with skin, eyes or clothing. See Material Safety Data Sheet for hazard communication standards.
